NBS began as a small group of friends, who believed the tri-state area borders Connecticut, Vermont and Nantucket. Their plan was to organize an event to generate funds for the college education of Norbert's children. A full day event of shooting targets, eating and drinking, cigars, a raffle and silent auction was too much fun for a once only occasion, especially in the name of doing good. The Norbert Buchmayr Society became official in 1982. A Gathering of Friends was one of the first for this explicit purpose, an idea that was well ahead of its time. Forty plus years later, there are literally hundreds of shooting events dedicated to charitable fund raising.
Much has changed since our first shoot, yet we hold fast to all that Norbert held dear. Family, friends, the outdoors and sportsmanship continue to be our guiding principles. In its earliest inspiration, the objective of NBS was to create a college fund for Norbert's children, Scott and Mary. Once this goal had been achieved, future funds were to be allocated in the form of scholarships and grants to children of all the Society's members. "Pay it forward" is the concept that a good deed or debt be repaid to a third party rather than the original creditor. Unbeknownst to all the founders and initial supporters of NBS, they were living "pay if forward," years before its eminent status in popular culture.
NBS was conceived in generosity and continues to flourish through the goodhearted efforts of so many. To name and thank all those who have contributed to our society, and made it possible to carry on from year to year is a daunting task for fear of inadvertently overlooking anyone's kindness. Guns, artwork, door prizes, homes, and services are but a few of the items that have been graciously donated to NBS, producing not only income for our scholarship fund, but to a successful event every September. Many of these donations are from people who never knew Norbert and who have never attended a single event. They are simply extraordinary people who embrace the principles and tenets of NBS, and wish to participate.
Our mission is to unite a community of friends who share a passion for the great outdoors, honoring its traditions and the meaningful experiences it brings. Each year, the Society comes together to celebrate these values and raise funds for scholarships and other impactful causes.
